The reason why we class this as an online gimmick is due to the fact Alex Tew came up with a great marketing idea which paid off handsomely for him, others have tried to achieve the same success with his idea and have failed. It was a one time idea because it did not have the unique selling point once other people started promoting pixel advertising sites all over the net.
