Douglas County Issues Contact Lens Solution Warning

Contact Lens Solution Warning

Contact lens users should check their cleaning solution to make sure they aren’t using a recalled product that could lead to eye damage.

AMO Complete MoisturePlus Multipurpose Contact Lens solution has been linked to Acanthamoeba keratitis, an infection caused by a microscopic, free-living amoeba that can cause blindness. It is thought that a 2003 reformulation of the product may have changed its ability to kill the common organism.

“The solution was recalled around Memorial Day, but many people apparently missed it. Now ophthalmologists are concerned that their patients are not aware of the recall, Dr. Pour said.

People who wear contact lenses should:

Check to see if they are using AMO Complete MoisturePlus.

Stop using the product immediately and call the company at 1-888-899-9183.

Dispose of all soft contact lenses and lens storage cases used with the solution.

Visit an eye care provider if you have any signs of eye infection.

The Centers for Disease Control reports ophthalmologists are continuing to see cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis. Others have said patients are still using the product at least three months after the recall, and may still have it on hand despite the fact it no longer is made.

The only Nebraska case to date involved a man from Lancaster County between the ages of 21 and 50, according to the CDC. Telephone surveys indicate the public awareness of the recall is low, and many people may have old bottles sitting on a shelf at home.

“The risk of serious eye injury is real, but it only takes a moment to make sure you are safe, Dr. Pour said.
